FASHION FACTS: DENIM

A vast amount of water goes into the production of jeans. Whilst this is not the consumers fault of course, we still have the power to ensure our actions when purchasing and wearing are more sustainable.

The production is water-intensive, but some jeans are also prewashed or stonewashed which uses highly pollutive chemicals.

Then creating compounds that must be disposed of, like chlorine, and organic pollutants like dye and starch. One major issue with denim is that there are serious health risks to the workers who are creating denim. Chemical run-offs from some of these manufacturers are also dumped into the water system, turning them indigo-blue such as the Pearl River in China. Streams still run blue in many areas where denim is manufactured.

This is why denim is a material we are always enthusiastic about giving a second chance, we upcycle denim in many different ways to ensure that it’s life can be extended rather than it being discarded. In the den, we try as best we can to repurpose denim so that it does not head to landfill.
